Lacanja with the Lacondones

We stayed at a small eco-lodge on the Lacandon River run by a local family. It was kind of sleepy; there was just another family or two there. Our host was busy during our stay - a forest fire had started down the road and he and other community members were fighting it. They live off the forest and have quite different management styles than their cattle ranching neighbors who burn the trees to make way for pasture.

Tyler buffing it up

Arlo and Talia in our amazing abode. The mosquitoes weren't too bad but the mosquito netting was very welcome to keep out armies of ants. Not quite protective enough for Tyler and Sabina, who slept in a tent.

The young men who jumped before us. We had an amazing exchange with these guys on every topic under the sun - migration, racism, ranching and hip hop.
